After more than two years of research, making and experimentation, Elaine Su-Hui has reached the culmination of her MFA with a new body of work exploring eucalyptus-dyed and reclaimed textiles, poetry, mantra, video, and sound.
Working with foraged materials, Su-Hui's practice has been deeply informed by political poetry and Buddhist philosophy. Gale Jackson’s anti-apartheid poem On Nites Like These became a central point of reference for the project, while the Kuan Yin dharmas provided a literal grounding for the work.
The exhibition brings together two large-scale textile works, painstakingly sewn by hand, as well as 108 screen-printed mantra ribbons. Alongside these works, Su-Hui presents her first video work, created in collaboration with film producer and friend Melissa Azizi, with a sound piece which features a collective recitation of Jackson's poem.
The exhibition represents an important expansion of Su-Hui's socially engaged art practice, bringing together textile, moving image and sound in a participatory body of work shaped by community, materiality, contemplation, and poetics.
Elaine Su-Hui's MFA Graduate Exhibition opens on Saturday 10 October, 3–5pm, at UpSpace Gallery. All are welcome to join her in celebrating the culmination of this significant period of creative research and making.

BETWEEN PLACES
Between Places brings together a group of emerging young artists from Parramatta High School in a one-night exhibition exploring transition, memory, and connection to place. Working across drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media, students have responded to the idea of being between places in deeply personal and unexpected ways. Join us at UpSpace Gallery on the 17th of June to celebrate the culmination of this 3-day artist residency and support the next generation of artists.

Every time I open the door of the UPSpace studios, I am permeated by a smell of old theatre, the kind of space that is in danger of extinction. My sculptures, of old textiles and found and rescued objects, speak of this atmosphere suspended between indifference and oblivion. What lies beneath the surface of our existences? UPspace is for me an Under space, full of wonders and surprises.
